Sugar Affects Your Brain and Tricks You
It’s not uncommon to feel the urge to eat sweets during the holidays, but what may throw you off a bit is the way your body processes sugar.
It can leave you feeling a bit uneasy in your stomach, but there are some other things sugar can do to you as well when it’s consumed in excess.
- Binge sweeting. Okay, this is a term that combines two words; binge eating and sweets. When your body craves sweets, it’s because of the addiction factor. When you eat too much of it, you crave too much of it. Make sense? As it turns out, research has shown that sugar can act as strongly as cocaine. You’ll become addicted, thus leaving your body with horrible withdrawal when you back off. What doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger right?
- Weight gain. Yikes! This one is no surprise, but you should know that gaining weight is still only a small part of your problem. While gaining weight doesn’t seem to be a “small” problem, just remember that the inability to think clearly is actually worse. Weight gain occurs when your body produces too much insulin. You’ll also collect fluid because of the way sugar affects your brain.
- Foggy brain. Ahhhhh, brain fog. It’s the worst, and if you’re eating too much sugar it can really wreck your ability to be productive on your job and at home. Too much sugar will slow down the mental processes in the brain and will make you feel a bit foggy.
- Your skin looks older than you feel. Aging should only happen gracefully, but when you eat too much sugar, it can take over quickly. When your body is working harder because of your sugar intake, it can leave you feeling sluggish and it will damage the healthy cells. Don’t let this happen to you. Focus in looking and feeling younger by cutting back on the sugar.
- Unhealthy tendencies for food choices. The more sugar you eat the more sugar you’ll eat. It’s tough to do away with sugar once you’ve had it. If you can keep it close to zero you’ll think yourself later. Avoid processed foods and sugary desserts if you can. Every once in awhile it’s okay to treat yourself, but think long-term when you choose your food.
Sugar isn’t evil, but it’s pretty darn close. Be mindful of what you eat, because your life depends on it. It’s very challenging to reduce blood sugar and keep it under control once you’ve unleashed it, so be aware of this as you get older too.
