The Truth about Military Contractors

Since the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, there has been a lot of talk about military contractors and what life is like for them once their mission is over.

Although many believe that these contractors make a lot of money, there are many that skim over the facts concerning these men and women and what life is really like for them.

These folks are just like you and me.

They are passionate about our country, they want to serve their country, and yet they get short-changed when it comes to getting medical services.

While they are under contract, they are covered, but once that job is completed the coverage for any injuries incurred is over.

Sounds awful right?

I mean, we put men and women on the front lines every day, and many never get injured. Many do get injured in the line of duty, but being a contractor puts a different spin on the lives they lead.

What really happens when it’s over?

Today, I’m going to share with you some valuable information about military contractors and what they face during their contracts and once the contracts are finished.

What You Should Know About Military Contractors

The military needs our support more than ever before, but what you may not realize is that military contractors put their lives on the line every single day.

Without a thought, we wake up every day and go through the motions without thinking what a serviceman or woman might be going through on our behalf.

Here are some basic facts that you should know about these dedicated men and women.

  1. They work for a corporation while contracting. You may not be aware that when contractors work with the military they are employed by a corporation. This means that they are classified as an employee. The actual employment contract is quite different from working a day-to-day job in terms of the nature of the work and the type of benefits these men and women receive. Many are paid every few weeks, and are generally given a decent salary for the job they are sent out to do.
  2. They are involved in a lot of planning and coordination. When a team leader is appointed, as depicted in the movie “13 Hours”, there is a lot of planning to be done. This means that from the time these men and women wake up, until the time they go to sleep, there is plenty to be done. Meetings, phone calls, and workouts are all planned. This doesn’t mean that they have zero down time, but it does depend upon the job they take as well as their daily duties.
  3. Healthcare is ONLY given until the contract is over. Everyone thinks that veterans get free healthcare. Healthcare coverage is granted during the contract, however, once the contract is over, those individuals are treated like absolute garbage. It’s as if they never existed, and it exemplifies that their existence was at best to get what the government needed out of them and that’s it. There is also no tracking system for issues that arise, such as the number of civilians that have committed suicide as the result of PTSD once they have served. It’s complicated, right?
  4. Combat related claims are reimbursed. While the rules on deadlines regarding contracts and when they expire is a little tricky, these individuals are reimbursed for combat related claims. The biggest challenge we face here is the number of claims that are made for PTSD. This is a real condition, and it should be managed. These men and women that risk their lives see things that most of you will only ever see in movies and read about in books. It’s difficult to imagine the demons they face while in other countries, and having a front row seat to murder, torture, and hard living.

Ultimately, these individuals are human beings that made the decision to help you and I live a better and freer life. These men and women give of themselves everyday to make sure that you and I can enjoy the freedoms our country offers.

It’s tough to say that it’s easy to pay for all of these claims, but if they are combat related shouldn’t they be covered for as long as these contractors need care?

I would certainly say so. I’m a veteran, and while I’ve not worked as a contractor, I know what they go through and what they are exposed to. It’s difficult for anyone in this situation to imagine what life is really like for military contractors.

Obama’s 2016 Budget Cuts and Medicare

Changes in healthcare are no longer shocking, but what is shocking now are Obama’s 2016 budget cuts and Medicare.

This is because more than $400 was cut from Medicare, a much needed and relied upon solution for the elderly and recent retirees for healthcare needs.

The cuts aren’t for this year alone, but rather the plan makes those cuts effective over the next 10 years. This is because any cuts made are taken in gradual steps.

The position was that Medicare would be handled with value-based payments. Here’s the kicker; these value-based payments are only for what is referred to as a post-acute provider.

While some of the costs were cut for Medicare, the costs will most likely be hidden in other places. Today, I’m going to share with you where those hidden increases can be found.

Understanding Obama’s 2016 Budget Cuts and Medicare

Medicare isn’t easy to for anyone to understand. In fact, there are folks working in the healthcare industry that struggle to understand what happens when changes are made in Medicare.

Here are some of the changes where the cost cutting can be seen.

  1. $126 billion dollars cut from Medicare can be found in the rising costs of pharmaceuticals. The cost of prescriptions has gone up, and it will continue to do so for every year that the new plan was written in. Obama mentioned negotiations on drugs known as “biologics”, often used for auto-immune diseases and rheumatic illness. The biggest challenge is that these are used often among the elderly. Negotiations are oddly prohibited for any medications that are billed through Medicare, meaning that the elderly are being drowned by high cost prescription drugs.
  2. Medical equipment tax. Did you know that most elderly are using medical equipment that is now much more costly than it was in years prior? There is a medical equipment tax that has made it much more expensive to buy necessary equipment like walkers, motorized wheelchairs, and other items that are commonly purchased by the elderly. Medicare isn’t really saving anyone any money at this time.
  3. Multiple procedures must be performed prior to surgical consideration. Did you know that there is a long series of procedures that must be performed before many surgeries can be carried out? Surgery should be the last resort, but oftentimes surgeons are anxious to cut into people when they cannot see any particular injury on an x-ray. While this may warrant an exploratory procedure, this isn’t necessarily true based on the history of elderly and how they respond to certain treatments.

The changes have not worked well so far, and Obama’s 2016 budget cuts and Medicare are going to continue to have an effect until we have someone in office that offers sound leadership.

Don’t let the promises of free healthcare, free college, and free everything take over your commonsense. The words being used in these speeches are strong and effective, but that doesn’t mean that they are true.

If you have been effected by Obama’s 2016 budget cuts and Medicare, please comment below and tell us how you are taking care of yourself.

7 Ways to Influence Others with Your Speaking

Speaking is an important part of running your business, but it’s amazing how much you can influence others with your speaking.

There are so many terms, analogies, and business jargon that you use on a daily basis but speaking gives you an opportunity to get in front of others and plead your case.

Speaking is also a gateway to building more and better relationships. There is a right and proper way to make sure that you are getting your point across, and how you speak to people will make all the difference in the world.

What matters most about your speaking engagements? What about speaking to your audience on a webinar? Today, I’m going to cover 7 ways that you can draw others into a great conversation, and how you can keep them engaged for the long-term.

Influence Others with Your Speaking Regardless of Topic

Regardless of what you talk about, you should be able to hold your audience captive. There are many problematic speaking mistakes that we make, but oftentimes it’s the little things that we do that cause big problems.

Have you ever listened to yourself talk? I mean really listen? Here are some things you can do right now to help you influence others with your speaking.

  1. Record yourself and play it back. Listening to yourself is a great way to assess what you’re doing great and perhaps what you’re doing that is not so great. Speaking to a crowd is easy for some while speaking to others one-on-one is much more challenging. Record your speaking engagement or even record as yourself as you practice at home. You’ll be able to hear your inflections in your voice, and you’ll have a clear picture of what you need to change.
  2. Take your time and cover your talking points. Taking your time is better than rushing through a speech. It’s not uncommon to speak too quickly when nerves strike. Just take a deep breath and relax. The more relaxed you are the better you will be able to speak.
  3. Don’t be so quiet about it…really. The more nervous you are the more likely you will speak quietly and shy away. It’s important that you speak in a way that allows others to hear you. Don’t hide your message. Project your voice out so the audience can hear you loud and clear.
  4. Crackling in the voice. Speaking clearly and without hesitation is important, but crackling in the voice is a sign of nervousness. This crackling sound may also occur if your throat is dry or you’ve had a cold. Always look for ways to keep your voice clear, as well as hydrated so that you can speak clearly and confidently.
  5. Trailing off at the end of the sentence. Speaking while nervous can cause you to trail off at the end off of your speech or your thoughts. If you trail off to the end, it makes it difficult for everyone to hear what you’re saying. Stay focused and aware of how you’re speaking to your audience.
  6. Don’t insinuate questions. New writers have been accused of making statements sound like questions when they really are not, but speakers are often guilty of this same problem. Business writers refer to this as “uptalk”, in which the inflection of the voice is such that it sounds as though a question is being asked. Just as a writer cannot assume what the reader is thinking or knows what he or she is talking about, you can’t assume that your audience knows what you’re talking about.
  7. Just say “no” to monotone! If you sound the same all of the time you’ll be monotone. This means that you lack inflection in your voice, and that spells trouble for you if you want your audience to pay attention to you.

Have you been booked for a speaking engagement? Even if you are running a webinar for your business, you should do them as often as you can so that you can practice as much as you can.

The more you speak the better you will become. You may want to join a group like Toastmasters, so that you can learn new methods and new ways of becoming a better speaker.

You’ll also learn new ways on how you can influence others with your speaking.

5 Ways to Get Your Readers to Connect with You

Blogging is without a doubt one of the greatest marketing tools you’ll ever use, but the greatest challenge is finding out how to get your readers to connect with you.

There are multiple channels that you can use today to connect with your audience, but most importantly, you want to make sure that your readers are connecting with you on a more meaningful level.

Business may often feel, or appear to be complex, but by its very nature it isn’t all that hard to figure out. In fact, building meaningful and deeper relationships with people will still be the most important thing you can do, but there is plenty to be done when it comes to getting your business up and running.

Today, I want to touch on some important aspects of your business, which revolve around how to get your readers to connect with you on a more personal level, and ultimately become your ideal customer.

Get Your Readers to Connect with You and Make Them Hungry for More

When you market your business online, you want to offer great resources and information to your readers. Building relationships happens when you give others a thirst for knowledge, and when you can play a part in giving them that knowledge.

How can your readers get to know you better and find out more about who you are and what you do?

  1. Create a landing page for full-service website. I ALWAYS refer to a full service website as a way to get your readers to connect with you and make them hungry for more. Your website should showcase more about you and what you do, but more so about how you can help them solve their problem. A landing page is a great place to start until you have had the time or the money to pay a developer to do so. There are several tools and services out there to help you create landing pages quickly, but always research free templates if you absolutely have no marketing budget to start with. You have to make it a priority to get your readers to connect with you.
  2. Create a Facebook page. Social media is a great way to connect with others, and Facebook is generally the first channel that most people use to get their face out there along with their mission, vision and message. If you have created a product, written a book, or something more, make sure that you let people know about it. You can share images and much more on Facebook and other various social channels. Let the world know you’re out there and let your audience know the WHY behind your creation and motivation.
  3. Get connected through Twitter. Whether or not you realize this, there are tons of resources popping up for promoting books. Many of the top ones are utilized via Twitter. There are groups that send out tweets to promote books, and some cost may be associated with it. You can visit websites like,, or even What do you have to lose just for checking it out? If you don’t have a book, start with a short one to get started. You can build a series from there as you gain more ideas.
  4. Feed them and they will come. Okay, so feeding people is awesome right? I like to eat, so it seems to me that if you focus on feeding people they will come to you. You may not be able to get everyone to eat from your hand, but you sure will get a crowd going right? Most buyers, at least the smart buyers aren’t going to buy the first time they see or hear about your product. Most folks need to see your product at least 20 times before they make a decision. This lends credence to the fact that you need to get yourself out there for all to see. Get your product out there and keep the positive messages flowing about how it will help individuals with what they are doing. Feed your niche market and you’ll become the winner every, single, time.
  5. Contesting! Wait, what? Did you know that running contests is a great way to attract your perfect customer and get them wanting more? Contesting keeps customers engaged, and it’s a great way to promote what you are rolling out next. If you have written a book, give it away for free for a specified number of days, and you’ll entice your readers. Give them something to talk about, and they will begin sharing your information with others. It’s a great way to grow a list for future products and endeavors.

5 Things You Need to Start Your Online Business

Starting an online business is popular these days, but it doesn’t come without a list of 5 things you need to start your online business.

No one can guarantee that you’ll have success, but if you take these 5 things and make a list before you get started, you’ll have a proper expectation of what happens when building your own business before you take the leap of faith!

You’re thinking about funding, who will work for you, who can you outsource to, and what about office supplies? I mean, don’t you need those too?

Here’s the good news.

You can make a list, check it twice, and you’ll want to make the list I’m talking about today before you do anything else.

So, what should you do first?

A Simple List of 5 Things You Need to Start Your Online Business

Being successful at anything in life means that you need a sequence of steps to follow that will lay out a blueprint for you to reach your goals and ultimately have the success you desire.

Here is a list of 5 things you need to start your online business.

  1. Find a need and fill it or find a problem and solve it. This is the very first and most basic of all steps. You may have gotten the idea that all you needed to do was take a popular product and sell it. In theory, this sounds like a great idea, but what you may not realize is that many people have had this same idea. It also seems to be the path of least resistance, but that doesn’t mean you’ll make a good living following this path. My simple rule is that if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably isn’t true. You’ve heard this right? Look around; what needs do you see that need to be filled? What problems are people facing that you can help them solve? Start by looking at real, existing markets. If you look for markets, you’re much more likely to have long-term success.
  2. Write copy that attracts your reader and converts them. Writing copy may sound easy, but it’s really more involved than you think. Writing isn’t a menial profession, in fact it’s in high demand right now. If you know someone that has had a difficult time getting their message across, it’s most likely because of the way they talk to people. More importantly, for an online business, you want to have clear, easy-to-read copy that will attract the reader you want, and ultimately turn them into a buyer. Write it out by hand first, and then you’ll be able to get into a rhythm with your writing. Always start with a compelling headline, and let your reader know what problem you can help them solve. We’ll get into this a little more in-depth later.
  3. Design an easy-to-use website. There is a lot to be said for having a good website, but with so many websites out there, how do you know which ones are good and which ones are lousy? The lousy websites most likely have very little information, graphics that are too heavy, and a site that isn’t easy to use. Its okay to work on it to make it attractive for your visitors, but make it easy to navigate and easy to use.
  4. Use search engines to help drive traffic to your website. It’s important that you drive as much traffic to your website as possible, but it’s not always that simple. You can’t assume that just because you have a website that your customers will find you. Make it a point to learn how to use search engines, and how to use other tools for your customers to find you. You need targeted traffic to make it worth your while. Paid ads are just one of the ways in which you can do this.
  5. Build credibility for yourself and become known as the expert. If you want to earn the business of your readers, you not only need to be professional, but you need to position yourself as the expert. Unless you position yourself as the expert, no one will believe that the information you give is reliable or worth of purchase. Build credibility in the marketplace, and focus on continuing to do good work for others.

There is a lot to learn to build a reputable and thriving business, but tomorrow we will begin to focus on each of these areas I’ve mentioned today. We’ll go a little deeper into these 5 things you need to start your online business.

How to Monitor and Analyze Traffic to Your Website

Getting ahead of your competitors is important, but it’s also important that you learn how to monitor and analyze traffic to your website. This is an important component of online marketing, and it allows you to get ahead by determining what you MUST do to get ahead of the competition.

What should you do in order to make sure that you can rise above your competitors? A part of this is finding out what they are doing, and how their websites rank.

I’ll also tell you that while this is important, you MUST also learn how to monitor and analyze your own data as well. Spending too much time focused on the competition will not leave you enough time to do the work for yourself.

Today, I’m going to share with you what I suggest so that you can get ahead of your competition in all aspects of your business and marketing plan.

Learning How to Monitor and Analyze Traffic to Your Website

Did you know that most small business owners still don’t see the value in having their very own website created? Sadly, those who do have websites often don’t see the value in newer online marketing methods.

There are several things you need to know before you learn how to monitor and analyze traffic to your website.

  1. Research the tools that are available to you. There are tons of tools and resources available for you to use to help you monitor and analyze your own website. The Google analytics tool is a great free tool to use so that you can identify your bounce rate as well as unique page views. You’ll also be able to find out what part of the world is watching you! Search engines are great for “searching”, but there is much more to be done in order for you to know what your competitors are doing, and what you need to do as well.
  2. Review social media pages. Reviewing the social media accounts/pages of your competitor will give you the bigger picture on who your competitor is catering to as well as how they do so. Engagement is everything, so getting your audience to talk to you and tell you what they want and need is vital. Social media is the key to unlocking the minds and desires of your readers. It’s all about attracting your readers and then getting them to convert to buyers. If you really want an inside look at what your competitor is doing, subscribe to their newsletters. You’ll see what they are saying, and how they say it.
  3. Truly identify your competitors. When you look at the websites of who you believe to be a competitor, are they really your competitor? Nope. If your mission and vision is clear, then this part should be easy for you. If it isn’t, then you’ll struggle to identify who you are competing with. Those who share a similar mission or vision are those you will compete with, without a doubt. Make sense?

The competition online is hefty, but if you can’t set yourself apart you’ll struggle to be seen in the sea of faces. Learn how to monitor and analyze traffic so that you can learn how to defend yourself against the competition!

6 Common Marketing Mistakes Small Businesses Make

If you own a small business then you already know that there are 6 common marketing mistakes small businesses make. Small businesses often feel pressure when it comes to their marketing budget, and there isn’t much room for error.

Resources are also in short supply, and oftentimes the purse strings are pulled tight to avoid money running out like a sieve.

It is imperative that you as a small business owner learn how to run and maintain your business without falling into the negative repeatedly. What can you do from a marketing standpoint to change the way your business is operating?

Today, I’m going to share with you 6 common marketing mistakes small businesses make that can affect their relationships and bottom line dramatically.

The 6 Common Marketing Mistakes Small Businesses Must Avoid

What would you say if I told you that marketing is the catalyst to helping your audience find your business? Generally, startups are careful to assess what they need in the beginning and as they grow their business.

There are many issues that business may face, but there are 6 common marketing mistakes small businesses must avoid in order to succeed.

  1. Lack of a website. Did you know that a website is one of the most important tools your business can use? A website is more than a place to use your name, it’s a place to state your values and mission. You cannot assume that because you’re open for business that people are going to discover you. No one cares about you until you make them an offer they cannot refuse. That’s just how people are. Put up a website that appeals to your customer, and make sure it’s easy to use.
  2. You don’t know the bigger picture. When you launch a business, you should have a big picture of what you want to do and what you want to accomplish. How do you plan to solve problems for others? If you cannot solve problems for others in the grander scheme of things, you don’t have a viable business. If you approach your business as a single act, you won’t make it very far. Look into the future, and then make a decisions about where you’re headed, and then set goals.
  3. Avoiding innovative tools. I still know plenty of folks that don’t believe in modern day electronic communication. Oops, they need to get in the know. Here’s the thing; mobile devices matter, and eventually those basic phones will be obsolete. There’s no room for basic communication at all, and let’s not forget that the most innovative tools are the devices and the apps they use. If you choose to avoid using these tools, you’re missing out on a significant part of your audience.
  4. Cater to your customers. I know what you’re thinking; you wish you had more folks following you and buying from you. The customers you do have are the most important customers! When you treat them right, you’ll have no problem getting referrals. Those who have a positive experience are always happy to let others know about it. When they don’t, they let even more folks know about it. Take care of your customers, and cater your marketing efforts to them. You’ll gain a lot of momentum.
  5. You have failed to work up a content strategy. One of the worst mistakes you can make is to leave out a content strategy. This includes the content and how you’re going to market it. Your content, whether written or video should be content that caters to your customers and their needs. This also means you need to market it as well. Email marketing and sharing through various social media channels is a viable way to share all of your content. Put your strategy together.
  6. Be a good listener. Talking is great, but listening is better. If your customers feel as though they are being heard, they will love you forever. Literally. Your customers need to know what’s in it for them, and if they don’t know, they can’t put their trust in you to deliver to them what they need. Listen to your customers, and find out how you can serve them better. You can always advise them as you go.

Marketing is your system, but your linchpin is your strategy that makes it all work together. What will you do? Don’t make these 6 common marketing mistakes that small businesses make.

What the Benghazi Committee Wants You to Know

The Benghazi Committee is a hot topic right now, and what’s more hot is the report that followed. At the end of the day, most folks just want to know whether or not the blame lies on Hillary Clinton or someone else. Is there just one and ONLY one person to blame?

The 800 page report is just one piece of the puzzle, but so many were hoping to get clear cut facts. When the report was released, statements were released that new information had been discovered, but there was no direct tie to the mistakes or blame of Hillary Clinton’s decisions, or lack thereof.

The kicker, is that interviews are still taking place, and above all, there is a man that was called in for an interview that made a social post about Hillary. The post used a hashtag like this, “#ifyouvoteforhillaryouarebeyondstupid”.

What’s in it for Hillary? Furthermore, the question should be, “What’s in it for Americans?” Here are a few things you should know about the Benghazi Committee and what they intend to do now.

An Interesting Interview with the Benghazi Committee

One of the most interesting interviews to come to light is the interview with an Air Force mechanic. This mechanic made a statement on his personal Facebook page, regarding timing of help arriving in Benghazi.

The statement referred to the fact that planes could have left from his base in Europe, in order to arrive in time to assist in Benghazi. This is significant, simply because the men refer to hoping for a “gunship” in the book, but they weren’t really looking for men on the ground.

The Benghazi Committee has now stated that the report can easily be amended at any time, as long as those witnesses are agreeable to come forward with viable testimonies. At a time when Americans have become fearful of Isis, it is more important than ever that these testimonies are made public.

Here are some potential issues regarding any interviews that may take place.

  1. The Department of Defense (DOD), is not allowed to continue to delay those interviews from taking place.
  2. Once these interviews take place, the transcripts will be provided. This is great news, especially for those who are seeking further answers. Family members of those who died as a result of the attack need to know what happened, and are hoping to find some solace with the final outcome of the report. (This could take decades in literal terms).
  3. Trey Gowdy, the Chairman of the Benghazi Committee, is determined to see this report through, as well as a better overall outcome. Answers to all questions are desired, but it’s a matter of how quickly those can all be answered.
  4. Democrats will continue to state that Republicans are addicted to the Benghazi Report for political gain, although we know that the families ultimately need and want answers regardless of party.

There are so many things that could be said about this situation and the tragedy ensued. I wasn’t there, but I served in the military for 25 years. I can assure you that the goal of the Benghazi Committee is to get answers and clear the air for the peace of loved ones who are devastated.

How Market Research Could Benefit You

Market research has been the first step to helping business owners for many years, but market research could benefit you tremendously while building your ideal customer profile.

Think about it; without research to back up your niche market, how could you possibly get valuable data about your ideal customer?

Gathering data on your ideal customer, as well as how your ideal customer lives, acts, eats, and sleeps is vital for you to market to them directly as well as how to get them to convert.

Getting data collected to help you learn how to market to your potential customers, and what you can offer them. You need to be able to make wise business decisions, and those decisions are based on the data you gather.

Today, I’m going to share with you how market research could benefit you.

How Market Research Could Benefit You from the Beginning

Knowing your clientele is important, but furthermore it’s all about building a relationship with them. You can research before writing out a marketing plan, and you can easily determine what products suit your market best.

Data is a key component of learning more about your customer and how to entice them to want to know more about you and what you do. Market research could benefit you in the following ways:

  1. You can have a clear picture of how your customer lives. Knowing how your customer lives and what they prefer in life can help you figure out how to market to them. You can determine what your website should look like, how interactive it should be, and tools and resources you can give them to help them make better buyer decisions.
  2. You’ll have a clear picture of what your budget should be. A marketing budget is critical, but if you don’t do your homework first you won’t see the bigger picture of how you can market to your audience, you’ll have no way to get them to see that you can help them solve a problem.
  3. You’ll be able to set goals for your marketing plan. Once you have in mind what you can do to build your marketing plan, you’ll be able to set goals. Setting goals is important, and it’s the very thing you should be doing to make sure you don’t overspend. Set goals of where you would like to be with your budget, and how many people you would like to reach. Would you like to run social media ads? If so, how many would you like to reach for the least amount of money?
  4. Once your research is done, take a step back and look at the marketplace and how it stands against what you’ve created. Do you believe that the marketing plan you’ve created is realistic and workable? Do you believe that you can stake your claim in the marketplace? If so, then it’s time to get down and dirty with your marketing. Get serious about what you’re doing, and put your best foot forward by spending at least one hour a day on marketing yourself. Decide that this is what you’re going to do and commit to making it the best marketing campaign possible.

If you want to build your own business, you should first do the homework and research your market as well as what is happening inside your market.

It’s okay to look at the competition and see what their up to, but remember that you shouldn’t spend so much studying your competition that you lose a foothold to them in the marketplace. Your goal should be to dominate.

If you want to grow a business of your own, and stake your claim in the online marketing space, focus on how market research could benefit you.
